AI addressing historical barriers for rural researchers

As members of a dispersed rural health research team, we know personally of the struggle to produce rural health research. Our principal employment, which is often the anchor for our research, competes for our time and makes it challenging to feel sufficiently committed to a research project. Add to this the need to develop new skills and, for some of us, issues of confidence, and our research intentions all too often end up in the too-hard basket. 

Despite the tremendous potential for meaningful outcomes, rural professionals often lack access to formal training in research methods or ongoing support for conducting quality research. Many work in isolation, juggling multiple roles with competing demands and scarce access to targeted training and guidance. This has, historically, led to slow progress, fragmented outputs, and too much methodological focus with little tangible impact. The gap between metropolitan health output and rural health output has traditionally been wide and has been widening as rural health professionals come under increasing pressure to keep abreast of modern developments. Artificial intelligence (AI) has added to that skills burden and, equally, enormous potential to increase output efficiency.

As a research team, part of our mandate is to support the rural health research agenda by developing the research potential of rurally based professionals. By focusing on the context-specific challenges rural researchers encounter, we’ve created a new model of research training that has changed how rural professionals engage with research and knowledge translation.

The RAID (Rapid, AI-powered, Iterative, Deliverables) project is a structured, AI-enabled approach to research and research training that has demonstrated substantial benefits, both in efficiency and engagement. Unlike generic, top-down methodologies, place-based research is developed by local professionals who understand firsthand the day-to-day realities of rural life. Engaging in research that is sensitive to the contexts and challenges of rural communities delivers solutions that are both practical and immediately relevant.

The RAID methodology is an AI-enabled approach that directly addresses many of the historical barriers faced by rural researchers. Drawing inspiration from agile project management and rapid review frameworks, this model streamlines project execution, leverages artificial intelligence for automating repetitive or time-consuming tasks, and establishes concrete, measurable deliverables. By weaving together the elements of rapid methodology, AI integration, Agile Iterative delivery, and a focus on deliverables, research teams using RAID can overcome the common challenges of slow progress, isolation, and lack of structure. Productivity improves, and morale and retention among rural professionals are enhanced.

A significant feature of the RAID project is its commitment to active, ongoing support for rural research professionals. Instead of a one-off training session or distant supervision, RAID establishes a persistent community of practice, fostering strong relationships among rurally dispersed team members who may rarely, if ever, meet face to face. This collective approach provides mentorship, troubleshooting, and shared learning, reinforcing continuous engagement and support.

Furthermore, RAID is designed to be genuinely inclusive and adaptive. Whether applied in health, education, or other rural domains, it helps rural research teams focus on questions that matter most to their communities and ensures that the resulting outputs are practical and accessible, rather than purely academic. The RAID approach stands to produce a new generation of research-active rural professionals equipped to lead change in their own communities. As these professionals build their research skills and confidence, the ripple effect will be seen in more engaged communities, more relevant and usable research outputs, greater retention of rural professionals, and better outcomes for rural people.
