14th NRHC Recommendation

Lack of support and lack of finances are two of the main barriers students raise in regards to undertaking a rural placement. There is a marked disparity in support services universities provide for medical students and the support that is offered to their non-medical counterparts.
WHO: Universities and the Australian Government across Australia
WHAT: Commitment to bring about equity of access to support and financial subsidies for non-medical students seeking rural placement
WHY: Undertaking rural placement is linked to an intent to work in a rural environment following graduation. Non-medical students are at a disadvantage as many may not consider rural placements as they are worried about being able to support themselves, and students and communities miss out as a result.
WHEN: as soon as possible
