14th NRHC Recommendation

There is now clear and growing evidence of the value of the arts in providing access to groups and communities to profound information, and change of behaviour. Recommend that Commonwealth Health Department establish an arts and health program to deliver grant based funding at a regional level to the equivalent of 1% of health funding in Australia and proportional at the regional level.

Emerging Theme:

The value of creative activities that draw in vulnerable people where traditional services cannot, is underestimated and underutilized. Connecting arts with therapy, personal development and community development as part of how we operate would be a huge step forward, with communities able to co-design solutions to their issues - the experts in a community are the people who live there, and engaging with them isn't a matter of setting up a service with expectation that folk will wander in and partake; this has been proven over and over not to work. Arts as an engagement tool does work - let's invest in something that works!
