It\u2019s no secret that rural and remote communities are suffering from long standing healthcare workforce shortages. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (South Eastern Section) is dedicated to bridging this divide, and one way we do this is to nurture and inspire the next generation of medical professionals by introducing them to outback communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re creating pathways that expose students to the unique rewards of rural practice,” explains Dr Shannon Nott, Chief Medical Officer for the RFDSSE. “Our comprehensive student placement program allows students to experience firsthand the impact they can make in communities with limited healthcare access.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key initiative is the RFDS’s collaboration with the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA), which recently brought Emma Vincent, a final-year Flinders University medical student, to rural NSW for a six-week placement. In addition to encouraging people to consider a career in rural medicine, this partnership forms part of the RFDS Reconciliation Action Plan, specifically aimed at growing the Indigenous rural health workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her immersive experience, Emma travelled over 10,500 combined kilometres by air and by road to provide care across 14 remote locations including Tilpa, Tibooburra, Enngonia, Lightning Ridge and Bourke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program offers students an immersive introduction to the breadth and complexity of rural healthcare, blending hands-on clinical experience with meaningful community engagement. Working alongside both Primary Health and Retrieval teams, students encounter a wide spectrum of cases and develop skills in delivering care within resource-limited environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We find that once students experience the strong community bonds and professional autonomy that come with rural practice, many reconsider their career trajectory,” Shannon said. “The program deliberately showcases both the professional satisfaction and lifestyle benefits of rural medicine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma says her time with the RFDS has been instrumental in widening her career prospects beyond the city limits: ” This experience was invaluable and highlighted how practicing medicine in remote areas demands not only clinical skills, but also resourcefulness, and a strong Community connection. I would strongly encourage anyone interested in primary healthcare to consider the RFDS. You’ll develop versatile clinical skills that serve you throughout your entire career.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RFDS continues expanding student placement opportunities across medical, nursing, and allied health disciplines throughout NSW, building sustainable pathways to address rural healthcare inequities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
