But what about returning to the workforce after you\u2019ve retired twice?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the situation for HESTA Policy Manager Karen Volpato, who decided to start working again last year after her second retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen\u2019s first retirement only lasted five months and, reflecting on it now, she realises she just needed a bit of a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She managed to stay retired for four years the second time, but after a big interstate move and renovating her home, she found herself looking around for her next challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Back in the game<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen is one of a growing number of Australians who are \u201cunretiring\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/employment-and-unemployment\/labour-force-australia-detailed\/latest-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Bureau of Statistics<\/a>, there are around 40,000 more people aged 65 and over in the workforce than the same time a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for returning to work after retirement are many and varied, including cost-of-living pressures, social interaction, and a sense of purpose<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for returning to work after retirement are many and varied, including cost-of-living pressures, social interaction, and a sense of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Karen, it was the promise of more intellectual stimulation that encouraged her to apply for a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s the joy of trying to solve a problem or come up with different solutions to things,\u201d Karen says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was the thing for me that really triggered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also think sharing your knowledge with others is really wonderful at this stage of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really loving it because I\u2019m working for a fund that\u2019s so devoted to members, as well as trying to get system change, which is really interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weighing it up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There can be a number of financial implications to explore if you\u2019re considering returning to work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re receiving the Age Pension, you\u2019ll need to let Centrelink know about any additional income within 14 days. Under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/work-bonus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Work Bonus<\/a>, eligible pensioners can earn $300 a fortnight without reducing their pension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re receiving an income from your super, you can switch your account back into the accumulation phase. It\u2019s important to know that this will have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesta.com.au\/members\/your-superannuation\/tax-and-super\">tax implications<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You could also keep your super in the income stream phase to supplement your income and open a new accumulation account for your employer contributions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There can be other costs to consider before putting your hand up for a new job:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to factor in things like petrol and vehicle maintenance, or public transport and buying your lunch, which can be more expensive than eating at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And if you\u2019re caring for someone, you may need to hire a carer while you\u2019re at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Considering reversing your retirement?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking of returning to the workforce, Karen has some tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThink about what really makes you interested about work and the things that really matter to you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd put an application in. Because I think a lot of retired people don&#8217;t. You might think you\u2019re going to get a negative reaction because of your age, but that\u2019s not always the case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many industries across Australia facing staff shortages, employers are eager to fill their vacancies and retirees are in demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, according to recruiter Robert Half,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roberthalf.com\/au\/en\/about\/press\/58-employers-have-hired-retirees-get-skills-they-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">58% of Australian employers have hired a retiree in the past 12 months<\/a>, and a further 37% would consider it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And why wouldn\u2019t they?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are great employers out there like HESTA who want that knowledge brought in,\u201d Karen says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet&#8217;s face it, once you&#8217;ve been at work a long time, you do have a lot of knowledge about yourself, as well as what you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a>Issued by H.E.S.T.
