Built on the traditional lands of the Ngarluma people, “Karratha” comes from the local Aboriginal word for “good country” or “soft earth”.

With a growing population of 17,000, Karratha faces considerable challenges bringing accessible and consistent health services to one of Australia’s most remote areas. Fluctuating economic cycles, housing affordability, natural disasters, delivery delays, social isolation and the transience of a large fly-in, fly-out population make for an unpredictable and sometimes difficult clinical environment.

For over 20 years, Pharmacy HELP Karratha has innovated, changed and expanded to make sure they stay the most accessible health destination in town. This sense of continuity is especially crucial in rural and remote areas, where access to healthcare can be limited. The pharmacy has been around long enough to serve families across generations in this remote town.

With extended trading hours, community education programs and tailored healthcare initiatives, Pharmacy HELP Karratha has proven their commitment to supporting patients in the town with high-quality care throughout their lives.

Pharmacy HELP has become a first port of call for locals seeking treatment for common and minor health issues, and for vaccinations. Medication management services help patients manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension and asthma by helping them understand their medications and stick to their treatment plans. Screenings for high blood pressure and cholesterol are also a vital part of preventative care to keep the community healthy.

As Karratha has become home to more and more young families, Pharmacy HELP has grown to become an integral part of the healthcare journey for mothers through every stage of pregnancy and eventually parenthood. They provide pregnancy immunisations, general advice, as well as treating infants and children with common ailments, which reduces the burden on local GPs and the hospital system.

Little Scientists Program caters to Karratha’s large population of children and introduces kids to basic chemistry with hands-on fun that fosters connection with local families and gives back to the community.

As in many parts of remote Australia, access to mental health and suicide support services can be challenging. To help address existing gaps, Pharmacy HELP has partnered with local mental health clinicians to develop and launch a pharmacy suicide and mental health support service, providing access to essential mental health services in the region. The initiative facilitates specialised training to identify and help people at risk, creating safety plans and connecting them with support.

Pharmacy HELP’s commitment to excellent service and patient wellbeing has fostered a healthy and connected community that extends well beyond Karratha city borders. The pharmacy visits the nearby Mawarnkarra Aboriginal Health Service daily to connect with local community and support Close the Gap efforts, while also coordinating with medical outpost nurses to bring telehealth and medication deliveries to a mining town 200 kilometres away.

Community pharmacists are integral to supporting patient care by providing essential services that are flexible, accessible, and grow with the community. Pharmacy HELP Karratha’s belief in bringing the best care to their patients across every stage of life has made accessible, flexible and fit-for-purpose healthcare a reality in the Pilbara – and hopefully with more to come.

Bridging the gap: How Dementia Support Pharmacists are transforming care in rural South Australia.

In regional South Australia, a quiet revolution in dementia care is underway.
