Out on the outskirts of Lightning Ridge, in the tiny opal mining town of Grawin, NSW, Laurie Dickson lives life a little differently and says he wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA place where you can see the stars, and everyone says g\u2019day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But living remotely comes with challenges most Australians never have to think about. In Grawin, mobile reception comes and goes, internet access is unreliable, and technology that many people depend on daily can quickly become frustrating .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Laurie, even something as simple as organising medical care can be complicated. Booking appointments online, accessing telehealth services or making reliable phone calls often depend on finding a patch of signal or relying on neighbours and friends to help stay connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for the past five years, while bravely battling cancer, staying connected to health care has never been optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where Angel Flight Australia has stepped in, bridging not only the tyranny of distance, but also the growing digital divide facing many rural Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While technology continues to transform healthcare delivery across Australia, communities like Grawin are at risk of being left behind. Telehealth can be a powerful tool, but when internet connectivity is unreliable and services are already stretched thin, virtual health care is not always enough. Nothing replaces face-to-face care, continuity of treatment and real human connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angel Flight has become a lifeline not only by transporting patients like Laurie to essential medical treatment, but increasingly by flying health professionals directly into rural and remote communities where healthcare access is becoming harder to sustain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As healthcare shortages grow across regional Australia, Angel Flight is helping communities remain connected to services many feared they were losing altogether. Residents from Lightning Ridge and Brewarrina have described Angel Flight as \u201cthe reason people can stay living where they love,\u201d with Laurie saying, \u201cWithout them I wouldn\u2019t be here. I could never afford the flights into the city – I\u2019d be dead now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite everything he has faced, Laurie remains known for his humour, resilience and positivity \u2014 qualities that have left a lasting impression on everyone who has met him, from volunteer pilots to fellow passengers. Laurie says the pilots and drivers are some of the nicest people he has ever met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His story is a powerful reminder that while technology can help connect us, it\u2019s people who truly show up when it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike many essential services, Angel Flight receives no direct government funding and relies heavily on donations and the generosity of volunteer pilots and drivers to continue operating, ensuring rural Australians like Laurie are not forgotten, no matter how far off the grid they may live.
