The cost of accessing health care is a growing concern across Australia. For people living in rural, regional and remote communities, these costs are often higher and more complex. Members of Australia\u2019s Rural Health Consumer Panel coordinated from the Violet Vines Marshman Centre for Rural Health Research, La Trobe University have previously shared the challenges of accessing health care. Distance, fewer services, and long waiting times are often part of the story. But one issue that continues to surface again and again is cost.<\/strong> Researchers explored this further to better understand what the cost of care really means for panel members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What emerged was not a single cost, but a pattern. Health care expenses were described as something woven into the rising cost of everyday life. \u201c\u2026I am currently a student and just noticing how the cost of living and cost of healthcare intersect and result in decisions that don’t prioritise health, is quite concerning\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When groceries, fuel, rent, and electricity all increase, health care can become something that is delayed, even when it is needed. \u201c\u2026It is a constant balance between attending to my health care needs, paying the bills, and putting good food on the table\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialist care was the most mentioned expense, with the out-of-pocket costs feeling overwhelming. \u201c\u2026private specialist prices are ridiculous\u2026\u201d <\/em>Visiting a local GP is becoming more expensive as bulk-billing becomes harder to find. \u201c\u2026bulk billing option is basically non-existent and must be a huge strain on some families\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicines were another cost that builds over time. \u201c\u2026Costs of pharmaceuticals can vary considerably\u2026\u201d<\/em> Each prescription may seem manageable on its own, but together they can place pressure on already stretched budgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental care stood out as one of the most difficult services to afford. \u201c\u2026Dental is my biggest problem. I simply cannot afford it\u2026\u201d<\/em> Without affordable options nearby, dental care is often postponed, sometimes for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private health insurance, once viewed as a way to improve access to care, is becoming harder to keep. \u201c\u2026Private health cover is unachievable unless you work full time\u2026\u201d<\/em> For some, the decision to give it up is already happening. \u201c\u2026We are considering withdrawing from our private health insurance because of its excessive cost\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In rural areas, the cost of getting to care adds another layer. Long distances and limited public transport mean car travel is often the only option. \u201c\u2026I have to travel nearly two hours, each way, to access the medical services we need. Sometimes this can be three trips a week. The cost in fuel is significant, as there is no way we can do this using public transport\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these experiences show how the economics of rural health extend far beyond a single appointment fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More bulk-billing services in rural areas would help reduce out-of-pocket costs for everyday care. Affordable dental services closer to home could prevent small problems from escalating. Travel and accommodation support that reflects the true cost of rural journeys would ease the burden on those who must travel long distances. For some people, telehealth is part of the solution. Attending some appointments from home can reduce travel costs, time away from work, and disruption to daily life. Clearer information about available subsidies and support programs could also help, as many people are not always aware of what assistance exists or how to access it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, panel members emphasised the value of listening to rural communities when designing services. By understanding the real-life costs faced in rural communities, there is an opportunity to design a health system that works better. One where getting care does not depend on how far you live from a city, or how much you can afford to pay.<\/p>\n
