For many women in rural Australia, talking about gynaecological health still feels uncomfortable. For some, it feels impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know this because I lived it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 30 years ago, I was diagnosed with vulva cancer after years of symptoms that I didn\u2019t understand and didn\u2019t feel confident discussing. Like many women, I believed what I was experiencing was \u201cjust part of being a woman\u201d. No one had ever explained otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living outside major cities makes this harder. Specialist services are often hundreds of kilometres away. Appointments require time, travel, money, and planning. For women juggling families, farms, work, and community roles, their own health is often the first thing sacrificed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time many rural women seek help, conditions are advanced. Treatment becomes more complex, more expensive, and more traumatic. Hospital stays are longer. Travel costs grow. Families take time off work. Communities lose valuable members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real cost is not just financial. It is emotional, social, and generational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After surviving cancer, I decided: I would not stay silent. I began speaking openly about gynaecological health \u2014 in halls, schools, clinics, and community centres. At first, people were uncomfortable. Then they listened. Then they started talking too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, I saw something powerful happen. Women who had never had a proper check-up booked appointments. Mothers spoke to daughters. Friends reminded friends. Early symptoms were no longer ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is prevention in action. And prevention is economical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through initiatives like International Gynaecological Awareness Day and local community workshops, we have shown that small investments in awareness save enormous costs later. A conversation costs nothing. A flyer costs cents. A community session costs far less than surgery, chemotherapy, and long-term hospital care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one regional town, after a simple information session, several women sought medical advice for symptoms they had been living with for years. Two were diagnosed early. Both avoided major surgeries. Both stayed in their communities. Both continued working and caring for their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is economic sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rural health services benefit too. When conditions are caught early, local GPs and nurses can manage much of the care. Specialist referrals become more targeted. Emergency interventions are reduced. Pressure on hospitals decreases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet funding for women\u2019s preventative health and education remains fragile. Awareness programs often rely on volunteers, small grants, and personal commitment. Too often, they disappear when funding cycles end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would never accept this uncertainty for roads, water, or electricity. Health should be no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rural women deserve reliable, accessible information about their bodies. They deserve services close to home. They deserve to know that speaking up will be met with respect, support, and timely care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The economics are clear. When we invest early, we save later. When we listen early, we heal sooner. When we educate communities, we strengthen them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
