Northern Australia\u2019s next generation of medical researchers and clinicians gathered in Townsville in August for the inaugural MED NORRTH Conference \u2014 a new forum designed to strengthen rural health research and collaboration across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 80 medical students, junior doctors and early-career researchers came together at the Townsville Yacht Club for a day focused on showcasing innovation, sharing ideas, and advancing research that directly benefits regional, rural and remote communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hosted by Northern Queensland Regional Training Hubs (NQRTH) in partnership with James Cook University\u2019s College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre (TAAHC), MED NORRTH (Northern Outcomes in Regional Research, Translation and Health) demonstrated that world-class health research can be driven from the regions, by the people who live and work there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning ideas into impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided by the theme \u201cBuilding Research Skills to Advance Regional Health in Australia,\u201d<\/em> the one-day program showcased how locally led research is improving health outcomes in regional, rural and remote communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From telehealth and medical education to clinical outcomes and Indigenous health, the breadth of topics reflected the region\u2019s diverse challenges and its solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendees presented oral and poster sessions, joined panel discussions and took part in structured networking that built bridges across campuses, hospitals and disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susan Wright, Medicine Impact Research Advisor at JCU, said the event filled an important gap for emerging researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvents like MED NORRTH foster meaningful connections and confidence,\u201d she said.
\u201cThey help students and junior doctors see that their research matters \u2014 that it can shape careers, policies and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research with heart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sense of shared purpose was felt strongly by Anna Duan, a medical student whose poster presentation earned her the Best Poster Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor students and junior doctors, it created space to learn about research in our own region \u2014 not just from textbooks, but through real examples of what\u2019s working in northern health,\u201d she said.
\u201cIt reminded me that research isn\u2019t solitary, it\u2019s something we do together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Dr Lauren Bosley, who took out the Runner-up Best Oral Presentation, the event proved that collaboration is key to sustaining research momentum in the bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was inspiring to see the incredible research that colleagues at all stages of their careers are engaged in,\u201d she said.
\u201cIt gave us the chance to connect with mentors and potential supervisors \u2014 opportunities that can be hard to come by when you\u2019re based in regional hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leap of confidence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second-year JCU medical student Fitsum Abay, recipient of the People\u2019s Choice Award, said presenting for the first time was \u201cnerve-racking but empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was surrounded by people far more qualified than me, but everyone was so supportive. Being recognised by people you admire was really encouraging,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building capacity for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Best Oral Presentation was awarded to Sarah McDonnell, an MBBS Honours student, rounding out a program that celebrated curiosity, courage and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For NQRTH and its partners, MED NORRTH is more than a conference; it\u2019s part of a growing movement to build rural research capacity and leadership from within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By equipping northern medical students and early-career doctors with the tools, mentors and confidence to pursue research locally, initiatives like MED NORRTH are ensuring that evidence generated in the regions stays in the regions and continues to improve lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A collective achievement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event\u2019s success highlighted the strength of collaboration between universities, health services, and professional colleges, supported by sponsors Miga, Mater Research, and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message from MED NORRTH was clear: rural research is thriving in northern Australia, powered by the expertise and commitment of those who live and work in the region and contributing to a stronger, more connected national research network focused on improving health outcomes for all rural Australians.<\/p>\n
