She had left Perth as a new graduate, spending the years since working across Cairns, Alice Springs, and even overseas as a sonographer and radiographer. Her work had taken her from large public hospitals to remote outback clinics, but WA felt like a new health system entirely — new faces, unknown challenges, and an urgent need for solutions.

Like many regions across Australia, patients in remote WA were waiting far too long for essential scans. Many travelled hours, sometimes entire days, just to reach an appointment. Having grown up in rural WA, she knew these patients — they were her family, friends, and community — and she wanted to be part of the solution.

This new chapter was her first experience flying to remote communities as part of a multidisciplinary medical team, bringing care to patients instead of the other way around. With a laptop-sized ultrasound machine and a willingness to adapt, she threw herself into the work. In her first week, faced with a cramped clinic space and a nervous, reluctant patient, she improvised — running an extension cord outside and performing the scan in the back of a Landcruiser ambulance. It wasn’t ideal, but adaptability is a way of life in the outback.

Thinking on Your Feet

Working in rural healthcare means constant problem-solving. Most days, she is the only sonographer on site, with no specialists or colleagues nearby to check her work. Over time, she has learned to trust her training and judgment — but she also leans on a national network of rural sonographers who support each other and offer advice when needed.

What she loves most about regional practice is the sense of community. Patients aren’t just names on a list — they are the local football coach, the barista at the coffee van, the people who keep the town running. That connection brings a powerful sense of responsibility and a drive to do the best job possible.

Challenges and Rewards

The work is not without its challenges. Equipment can be outdated, power can flicker mid-scan, and some days involve hours of driving or flying to reach the next clinic. Fatigue is real, and frustration can creep in — until a moment reminds her why she’s there.

Perhaps it’s the relief on a pregnant patient’s face when a long-feared complication turns out fine, or the gratitude of a station worker who drove 600 kilometres on the wrong week but was still seen. These small moments of impact keep her grounded and motivated.

A Job That Means Something

Over the years, she has scanned everything from ruptured tendons to pregnancy emergencies, learning to improvise, stay calm, and make decisions with limited resources. And she has seen how much one scan — one answer — can change the trajectory of a patient’s life.

For anyone considering rural sonography, her message is simple: try it. It won’t always be easy, but it will be deeply rewarding. The work stretches you, teaches you, and ultimately connects you to something bigger than a hospital or clinic — it connects you to a community.

For her, rural sonography is not just a job. It is a way to give back, ensuring quality healthcare reaches the people and places that shaped her, and helping others live healthier, more secure lives in the country.

        Refugee health in Wagga Wagga

As a fourth-year medical student, Xanthie Harvey recently had the opportunity to complete a rural general practice (GP) rotation with Read more

Making shiftwork healthier: What I wish I knew sooner

    It’s 4am, and I’ve been awake for 22 hours.
