As a country kid, she saw the powerful impact of the quintessential rural GP: the broad skillset, the comfort they brought, and the unwavering care they gave their communities. It was a role she aspired to—not just treating illness, but being part of something bigger. She wanted to care for people she knew, in places she loved, with intention and connection.

At 17, she entered James Cook University’s medical program in 2001. The program’s emphasis on rural exposure, strong mentorship, and contextual learning deepened her commitment to forging a career in rural landscapes. As an intern, she became part of the then-new Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP)—an initiative designed to streamline training for rural generalists and strengthen healthcare access in rural and remote communities.

Over the next 19 years, Dr Wallin worked across a remarkable range of places—Cooktown, Wujal Wujal, Hope Vale, Laura, Longreach, Weipa, Maleny, and most recently Badu Island. She devoted herself to primary care, emergency medicine, anaesthetics, public health, and everything in between. These experiences taught her to listen deeply, adapt quickly, and lead with compassion. For her, rural medicine was never about isolated consultations—it was about continuity of care, walking alongside families and communities over time. It was personal, and it was powerful.

Along the way, she came to recognise that a spirit of adventure, a can-do attitude, strong leadership, and “big-sky thinking” were as much a part of her rural medical education as the formal curriculum. Those qualities not only sustained her through challenges but shaped a career she describes as equal parts humbling, rewarding, and demanding.

Earlier this year, Dr Wallin became the Medical Director of the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway. The role allows her to advocate for a model of medicine she knows to be transformative for rural and remote communities. For her, the pathway is about far more than professional opportunities—it offers balance, purpose, connection, and adventure. It provides diversity and flexibility that can sustain a career across all stages of life.

This year holds particular significance, marking two decades since the Roma Agreement—the landmark commitment that gave rise to the rural generalist movement. That’s why the upcoming Queensland Rural Generalist 20-year forum in Roma this October is deeply meaningful for Dr Wallin. Roma is where it all began, and returning feels like coming home. To her, the forum is not only a celebration but a call to action: to reflect on progress and to imagine what comes next. With rural generalism on the cusp of national recognition, she believes now is the moment for bold, big-sky thinking. The questions are clear: What does rural medicine need next? How can it remain strong, sustainable, and truly connected to the communities it serves?

Her passion comes from lived experience. She has seen firsthand the difference skilled, connected, compassionate care makes in rural communities. She has also seen the unique power of training doctors not just in medicine, but in community.

Whether a student, a seasoned practitioner, or someone simply passionate about rural health, Dr Wallin hopes people will gather in Roma this October—to celebrate, dream, and commit together to the next chapter of rural generalism.

    <a title="“Live and Learn” –
