From isolation and financial stress to extreme weather and generational change, these challenges can take a serious toll on mental health. Rural Aid’s mental health and wellbeing team plays a vital role in supporting farming families by providing practical, compassionate care where it’s needed most, within the communities themselves.

Rural Aid uses an embedded model of support, with mental health professionals who live and work in rural and regional areas. These counsellors are part of the local fabric, familiar faces at the café, markets or school gate. This consistent presence builds trust and reduces the stigma often associated with seeking help. By forming genuine, ongoing relationships, counsellors can offer support early, before issues escalate.

On a day-to-day basis, Rural Aid’s wellbeing team provides counselling and tailored support for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, family challenges, financial stress and decision fatigue. Support is offered in settings that feel comfortable, often on the farm or in a nearby community space. These informal, respectful conversations help break down barriers to accessing mental health services.

Demand for Rural Aid’s services increases sharply during times of disaster. Whether drought, flood or bushfire, these events place enormous emotional and practical strain on rural families. Rural Aid responds by scaling up services and deploying support quickly, drawing on staff who already know the community. This allows a timely, compassionate response grounded in local knowledge and trust.

Earlier this year, following major floods in Queensland and New South Wales and ongoing drought in South Australia, Victoria and parts of New South Wales, Rural Aid counsellors were working at full capacity. While recent rain may bring future relief, crops and livestock take time to recover, and cashflow remains tight. The team continued providing counselling on farms, by phone or in local cafés, attended community events and hay drops, delivered school wellbeing programs, hosted morning teas and made hundreds of check-in calls.

In one case, a farmer referred by a neighbour after losing a season’s yield received immediate support. A Rural Aid counsellor provided mental health care and connected the farmer with financial and practical assistance through Rural Aid’s broader support services. That early intervention helped stabilise the situation, maintain farm operations and strengthen community ties.

Alongside adult counselling, Rural Aid is committed to supporting younger generations. One key initiative, Mustering Growth, is delivered in schools and uses age-appropriate, interactive activities to build emotional literacy and wellbeing in rural children. Supporting children early helps lay the foundation for stronger mental health across the whole community.

Flexibility remains at the heart of Rural Aid’s approach. Counsellors work around farmers’ schedules and personal circumstances, offering support in person, by phone or video. The service is free, confidential and shaped by the realities of rural life.

Rural Aid also partners with local health services, councils, schools and grassroots organisations to strengthen support networks and ensure people are connected to the right services when they need them.

As disasters become more frequent and rural challenges more complex, the need for community-based mental health support continues to rise. Rural Aid’s embedded model meets that need by being present, building relationships and walking alongside people through difficult times.

Rural Aid is growing, with recruitment underway for a Mental Health and Wellbeing counsellor in Central Western Queensland. Whether through volunteering, donations or partnerships, every contribution helps strengthen the resilience of farming families and rural communities.

Need Support?

Farmers and rural residents can access free, confidential help by visiting www.ruralaid.org.au or calling 1300 327 624.

    <a title="“Live and Learn” –
