Asbestos was used in thousands of products before 1987. It could be anywhere – in houses, garages, outdoor toilets, chook sheds, dog kennels and other backyard and farm structures.
The Asbestos Awareness campaign has recently released a guide to ensuring safe practices for the management of asbestos in rural and regional communities and on farms (http://asbestosawareness.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Fact-Sheet-3-Rural-Regional-and-Farming.pdf).
Asbestos can also occur naturally in rocks and soil and can occur near the ground surface. The Naturally Occurring Asbestos video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAwMEZ2UeD8&feature=youtu.be, featuring Asbestos Awareness Ambassador John Jarratt, covers where such asbestos might be found and how to manage it if it is on your property.
