5th Rural and Remote Scientific Symposium

Dr Stephen Duckett, Health Program Director at Melbourne’s Grattan Institute will join an impressive line-up of presenters at the 5th Rural and Remote Health Scientific Symposium (5RRHSS) at Old Parliament House, Canberra on 6-7 September.

Dr Duckett co-authored the Grattan Institute’s report, Perils of Place: Identifying hotspots of health inequality. Using data from Queensland and Victoria, the report introduced a system for detecting locations where hospitalisations for preventable conditions have been at least 50% higher than the state average for a decade. The report also proposed that reducing potentially preventable hospitalisations in hotspots in Victoria and Queensland — the two states the report studied – would save the health system at least $15 million a year.

The 2-day Symposium will bring together dynamic, expert speakers, rural and remote health researchers and policy developers to discuss the current and emerging issues that will shape the rural and remote health landscape.
